The Legacy of Limerick's School in Saskatchewan

Closure of the Limerick School was a terrible blow to this community. We grieved as we watched children from the community take up their education in four different communities.

However, it seemed that there might be a way to salvage something from the pain of the closure. Following community meetings and extensive discussion the Village of Limerick and the R.M. of Stonehenge have decided to take over the Limerick School building and develop it as a means to economic diversification.

In accomplishing this there will be real challenges but there is a vision and a will to bring the Limerick Opportunity Centre to reality.

During the discussions one of the most worrying considerations was how unforeseen capital costs would be met. The tax base of the two jurisdictions is solid but not extensive and any large capital requirement would cripple the project before it could become well established.

At that point we decided to invite Limerick residents and Limerick School students to join in the initiative with us. If you make even a small contribution to the Limerick School Legacy Fund taken together the contributions will grow a Fund that will give our local governments some peace of mind as they work to make the Opportunity Centre a viable reality.

Money obtained from this Legacy Fund drive will be invested and held for use on capital costs only. That means that you will contribute to assuring that the building remains one that we can all be proud of. Legacy Fund money will be spent only after approval for the expenditure by the Joint Operating Committee. This committee is currently made up of representatives from the two local governments but will be expanded in the future to include interested citizens.

The contribution that you make will be a tax deductible charitable donation. Your name will appear in the Limerick School Legacy Book but the amount of your contribution will be kept confidential. We would like those of you who attended Limerick School to include comments to be recorded with your name (there will be room for about 25 words). The Legacy Book gives everyone an opportunity to speak about the ways in which Limerick School was significant in your life. This will become a lasting tribute to the school.

We are excited about this campaign and invite you to participate. You can make your donation payable to the Village of Limerick and write Legacy Fund on the memo line of your cheque. Cheques should be sent to Limerick Opportunity Centre, Legacy Fund, P.O. Box 174, Limerick, SK. S0H 2P0 or can be dropped off at the R.M. Office.

The Joint Operating Committee and the present and future residents of Limerick thank you for giving this Legacy Fund campaign your consideration.
